Fish River Canyon

This is Africa: Yesterday we arrived at our campsite and planned to bike up the road to see the sunset at Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. It was a tough ride since it was substantially uphill into a strong headwind. I made it a just after 5pm and had been told sunset was at 5:15. However the sun had already set a 5pm. TIA. Because of not seeing this glorious sunset we awoke an hour early and drove to see the sunrise. The best part of all this was the staff made us grilled cheese and ham sandwiches for breakfast.

Today we rode up into the mountains parallel to the canyon and the last 13 miles were downhill with the wind behind us. A brilliant ride. Beautiful desert landscape and fewer concussion causing washboard roads.

We are now in Ai Ais. A high desert campsite primarily for hikers. It has a hot springs and hot showers. You can’t conceive of how good it feels to have a hot shower after weeks of cold or no shower. Bliss.

I am working on solving the lack of enough food and protean at dinner. The crew are fabulous cooks, but this trip has a budget, and there simply is not enough to eat for hungry cyclists at dinner. I had been buying and eating a package of cookies at day. These are available at the gas stations along the way. I am how trying the African version of jerky, more protean but a lot of salt. We’ll see how my system reacts..
